My today’s JakartaPost
was already in front of my door as I was coming back from mosque to perform
early morning prayer. A headline for today is Superstorm Sandy that hit The
United States, New York and different areas as well. This condition caused
psychological and physical damage for people who were affected. The government
also suffered financially and politically. All of sudden my mind went some
years ago when I was in my first semester’s class- learning about human. As an
introduction, power point slides of the lecture explained about the importance
and purposes of science.
One of the
goals of science is to be able to predict. In relationship to
that, there is something that I never realized until I came to the West in
which I spent some years of my life. Everyone over there wants to control
everything in his or her hand because it is so common to express “Everything is under control”. A common
expression reflects what the society’s mind to some extent.
The
emergence of technology, which is part of science, can create a sense of
controlling over nature within human mind. This is something that happened
during the ancient time too – People of Ad.
You can look up a history and search for Prophet Hud, 4th generation
of prophet Jonah. The people of Ad at
that time had a sophisticated technology, of course it is not the same with our
current technology. It was indicated by the availability of high
buildings and nice architectures, and being able to design environment, you can

The availability of technology in human hand sometimes can make human forgot a
reality of life that is full of mystery. Technology can help people to run
their lives easier not to change the way they look at a basic reality of life.
It seems now
that some sophisticated technology failed again to meet its basic purpose -
predicting what would happen in the future. One should think how much science
can control nature. In fact, this Superstorm Sandy should be a turning point
for scientologists or people who rely too much on science as God that the
science is not more than just a game that can finish when the basic rule is
being violated. They should think that science was unable to even predict this
sandy storm can come, damage a lot of houses, and even displace people.
Technology
is a product of human mind, which most of the time is corrupt. Should the
sources of product is already imperfect then what would happen with the product
?. For sure, the product will contain some defects as well. Thus, technology
will never be able to serve its basic purpose completely- predicting what the
future holds on 100 %. The only thing that is sure is the Creator of the future
can make the available technology unable to predict the future 100 %. Now, let
us think about this, does technology create a different worldview or our
worldview creates a different technology that blinds us to see a reality of life
?
